The teachers at the Olkeju Baluti Primary School have initiated a community education classes to improve the literacy level in the area. The literacy level in the community is just 40% compared with 81% across Kenya and 99% in the UK.
This important project will enable the local adult population (many of whom never been to school) to be able to read and write in their Maasai language as well as in English and Swahili. The classes currently run twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays for 2 hours each day.
